Brief history of the ministry / organization:
Introduction: The HUB was born out of an idea by Bishop Jason Gordon who saw the need for the Catholic Church to play a role in assisting the recently unemployed. This registered non-profit organisation provides the Diocese with the opportunity to fulfill aspects of the social teachings of the church on matters of poverty and social justice. Foremost in the development of The HUB was the need to remember that “being in the image of God, the human individual possesses the dignity of a person, who is not just something, but someone.” Therefore the logo, the philosophy and mission are reflective of this thought.
Our Philosophy: Our name, The HUB People-Helping-People shows that there is no difference between the people in need and the people helping. Those coming for assistance are not coming with empty hands they will be coming with skills thus enabling them to help themselves and to help others. The people coming in are not just coming to receive they are also givers. Thus we are building a community of dignity and a community of faith.
Mission Statement: “To connect people to people in need in Barbados.”
What we do:
- Through the Care Ministries of the Church and the Saint Vincent de Paul we assist persons in meeting their basic needs.
- Provide guidance to individuals who are seeking to start a small business
- Connect individuals who are seeking financial and other resources to start business to organisations that can provide such assistance
- Assistance organisations that provide services to the needed
- Through agreements with international organisations donate supplies and other items to organisations that are in need and or provide assistance to the needy.
The Dates/ Period for execution of activities
Our Achievements to date:
- Assisted persons in meeting their basic needs:
The HUB was officially launched in April 2104 and commenced activities in June 2014. During the period June 2014 to December 2015 the number of persons who sought assistance from the Hub and are registered is approximately 100. Of these, the majority sought assistance in meeting their basic food needs and paying of utility bills. A few others sought assistance in meeting university tuition fees and assistance in payment of other household bills. The assistance requested for basic food, payment of utility bills and other household bills was given mainly through arrangements with Saint Vincent de Paul, Living Water and, in a limited number of cases, directly by The HUB. Assistance for the payment of University of the West Indies (UWI) tuition fees was given directly by The HUB.
- Provided guidance to individuals who are seeking to start a small business:
The HUB is presently providing guidance to five persons who are seeking to start their own small businesses. The guidance provided can be broadly classified as follows: understanding the business sector in which their business would be placed, knowing their target market, understanding the requirements (time, equipment, skills, financial, etc) and preparation of a business plan.
- Connected individuals who sought/are seeking financial and other resources to start businesses to organizations that can provide such assistance:
One of the five persons who sought guidance and assistance in sourcing financial resources has been successful and is already in operation. Two others, while in operation, are also in discussions with a financial institution for assistance which will allow for improvements in their business ventures. The remaining three continue in the business planning phase.
- Provided assistance through agreements with international organisations and regional organisations:
Through agreements with Food for the Poor (FFTP), The HUB donated medical supplies, medical equipment, furniture and other general items to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) valued at approximately US$3m. Also through FFTP, The HUB continues to provide the Care Ministries and other organizations that supply food hampers with highly nutritional rice and soy products valued at approximately US$62,000.
An agreement with Universal Foods and Armstrong Agencies allowed The HUB to present a year-long supply of breakfast cereal to a number of organisations that provide this service to schools for the 2015/2016 school year. These organisations include TheDates/ Period for execution of activities
