ADVENT: OH, WHEN IS HE COMING? A Reflection By Fr. Michael Barrow, SJ

WHY WAIT?GET IT NOW! - The adverts tell us. We live in an age where we expect everything instantly, instant coffee, instant mash, instant credit (if you dare risk it). Do you remember not so long ago when you had to wait for films to be developed? "Should be ready by Monday, sir." No wonder people begin to wonder what happened to the promises of Christ. 2000 years ago - and we're still waiting!

It is not that the Lord has decided to make us wait; it is in our very nature that sudden growth and sudden healing do not go deep and are not lasting. It takes time. The coming of Christ and spreading the word of Christ cannot be done instantly.

Living in an age where we expect everything instantly and are not easily patient, waiting for some things is a joy and excitement in itself. Some time ago a family I'm very fond of were due to arrive at the airport. The plane was late and the longer I waited the more excited I was feeling – until eventually they came through and little Nao, sitting in his buggy looked quite worn out, until suddenly he saw me and his face lit up as he jumped up and came running to me to pick him up. My waiting for them was very different from other times I've had to wait at the airport. When it is someone I hardly know, I get so impatient and blame the airline and everyone else for my having to wait – so very different from my patience and joy in waiting that family that I love so much. What does it feel like to be waiting for Jesus?.
